Course Description

National Water Hygiene: The National Water Hygiene training scheme is a nationally recognised scheme for anyone working on, or adjacent to water supply installations known as ‘Restricted Operations’, meeting the requirements as set out by water supply companies and Water Supply Regulators across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The scheme sets out an individual’s duty of care to prevent contamination and to maintain public health by applying UK Water Industry best practice approaches.

Scottish Water DOMS: The Scottish Water Distribution Operations & Maintenance Strategy (DOMS) training course is a company scheme, created and owned by Scottish Water, relevant for everyone working on Scottish Water clean water sites. The scheme was first launched in 2004 / 2005 and sets up the minimum standards and competencies which must be followed by all who complete the course.

Course Aims

National Water Hygiene: The course provides candidates with essential knowledge, understanding, and awareness of the potential hazards and risks which have the potential to impact the quality of drinking water when working on restricted operations sites and how to prevent these, following recognised industry hygiene standards.

Scottish Water DOMS: The Scottish Water DOMS scheme has been produced to ensure everyone follows a consistent approach across the Scottish Water Region to safeguard public health and the water quality supplied to customers. By taking this consistent and structured approach to the operation and maintenance of water distribution assets, problems affecting water quality such as discolouration, microbiological failures, and issues with taste and odours will be avoided or reduced. The Scottish Water DOMS scheme builds upon the public health principles covered by the EUSR National Water Hygiene training scheme.

Who Should Attend?

National Water Hygiene: Any person working on a restricted operations water site, such as service reservoirs, water pumping stations, water treatment works, wells, springs, boreholes, and those working on the water distribution network inclusive of water mains and service pipes must have a valid National Water Hygiene card.

A standard training programme is delivered to all direct employees of water companies, contractors, consultants, and designers to ensure consistent standards are met when working on drinking water supplies and to demonstrate competence in their understanding of safe water hygiene practices.

Scottish Water DOMS: Scottish Water DOMS training and registration via EUSR is required for everyone who is working on, or adjacent to water distribution activities and assets known as ‘Restricted Operations’. This includes, but is not limited to, all Scottish Water staff, operational personnel, contractors, consultants, alliance partners, framework suppliers and utility connection providers.
